Three Reasons Why The MG Road Boulevard Is Just The Thing Bangalore Needed

When the beautiful open MG Road Boulevard lined by flowers on both sides was demolished a few years ago to make way for the construction of the Metro, many Bangaloreans were left disappointed. Little did they know that after reconstruction, the boulevard would take structure in the way it has.
The MG Road Boulevard was reopened in May 2013. A brief hiatus and one makeover later, it has taken on an entirely different look which has left us all mesmerized. Here are three things that make it as unique as it is.

  1. The Horticulture Department was given the responsibility of developing the boulevard. They have grown over 1000 different kinds of saplings including flowers, adding color to the concrete of MG Road. These plants are watered with recycled water, using drip irrigation method. All the water used in the various fountains and other decorative structures here is recycled and reused. Through this, the Boulevard seems to be delivering lessons in recycling and sustainability to the people of the city.
  2. The boulevard functions as a fun, interactive space for both children and adults. Complete with an art center, an auditorium, exhibition halls for the art enthusiasts and a play area that even has a giant snakes and ladders game for all its visitors to enjoy, the MG Road Boulevard provides the much-needed break from the city life without having to leave the city.
  3. All the art installations found in this place are made mostly of recycled material and are made by local artists or art students. The boulevard space also houses photographs and murals that show Bangalore as it was many years ago. The focus has been to promote local art and preserve the culture of the city through these.
